Gunman shoots police car in Frankford

An undercover cop emerged unscathed after someone sprayed his unmarked police car with gunfire, then he found himself face-to-face with several pistol-toting suspected drug dealers in Frankford last Friday.

Police arrested one man for pointing a gun at the cop and another for narcotics possession, but investigators are still trying to determine who fired the shots that struck the occupied police car.

It all happened at about 7 p.m. near Frankford Avenue and Bridge Street. The officer was working on a narcotics investigation and driving eastbound on Bridge near Lesher Street with two suspects in the back seat when he heard gunshots. The officer saw people running and drove around the block, where an unknown man approached his car and shot at him, police said. Two bullets struck the car.

The officer chased the gunman on foot through an alley and was confronted by three men all pointing handguns at him. When the officer took cover and identified himself as a cop, the suspects scattered.

Police eventually captured Malik Smith, 21, of the 1600 block of Worrell St., nearby. He was charged with aggravated assault, weapons violations and related offenses. Police did not find a gun on him. Police stopped several other men in the area and arrested one of them on narcotics charges. He was identified as Gexex Johnson, 22, of the 5200 block of Marlowe St. ••
